Shrewsbury Town Championships

With the league season drawing towards its conclusion, the summer chess scene is just about to begin. As well as the usual team cup competitions with the Minor Knockout and Cox trophy to be battled for, the team rapidplay is set to return and, as every, the hotly-contested Shrewsbury Town Championships are set to begin.

Having fielded the winner of the inaugural competition three years ago when David Everington secured the title, as well as providing his successor in the form of Jamie Hopkins, the title left Shrewsbury Chess Club last summer when Nigel Ferrington of Telepost won it.

We believe that the time is right for a Shrewsbury player to win the title, again. What’s more, we hope to provide the under 140 champion as we have done in the two previous years (well done Ian and Ivor) and possibly even the under 100 winner as well.

However, in order to maximise our chances of doing so, we want as many entrants as possible. At the moment, there are 7 from Shrewsbury and 8 from Telepost, which is not enough! We want more. At the very least, it would be nice to reach double figures from our representatives.

For anyone wishing to enter this excellent competition, simply pop an email to controller Keith Tabner (keithtabner@hotmail.com) or give him a ring at (01743) 884 943. If you can’t get through, chances are it’s because Keith’s away – if so, feel free to leave a comment here or give me an email and I’ll pass the message on.
